Ben & Jerry's

Retail Design | Brand Implementation | Australia & New Zealand

A Brand That Evolves Without Losing Its Identity

HRID's involvement with Ben & Jerry's began in 2009, with the first Australian store design. What followed was an ongoing relationship spanning subsequent retail developments and store rollouts across Australia and New Zealand, including locations within Hoyts cinemas.

While working within the established Ben & Jerry's brand strategy, our role has been to translate its distinctive identity into individual retail environments, ensuring that each store remains recognisable while responding to its location, operational requirements and the changing expectations of customers.

Over the years, the stores have naturally evolved. The brand remains consistent, but the design expression continues to develop through new materials, finishes, layouts and customer experiences.

This is what makes successful retail design more than simply repeating a familiar look. It is about understanding the essence of a brand and finding ways to keep it relevant for the future.

HRID's Role: From Design Through to Construction

Throughout our involvement with Ben & Jerry's, HRID has undertaken the complete interior design service, translating the established brand strategy into individual retail environments and taking each project from design development through to detailed documentation and construction coordination.

Our role has extended well beyond the visual presentation of the stores. We have been responsible for developing the interior layouts, resolving functional requirements, selecting materials and finishes, detailing custom joinery and preparing the comprehensive design documentation required to communicate the proposed works to builders and contractors.

The original Australian store presented its own structural challenges. The premises incorporated two adjoining shop tenancies, and to create a functional retail environment, the dividing wall between the two shops needed to be demolished. This required coordination with structural engineers to address the structural implications and ensure that the proposed alterations were properly considered as part of the design and construction process.

As the brand expanded, our involvement continued through subsequent store rollouts across Australia and New Zealand, including locations within Hoyts cinemas. Each project required an understanding of the individual premises, its operational requirements and the practical considerations associated with delivering a successful retail environment.

HRID's involvement also extended into construction, coordinating design-related matters with builders and relevant consultants, clarifying documentation and helping ensure that the approved design intent was properly understood and implemented.

This complete approach allowed us to maintain a consistent understanding of the brand while responding to the individual requirements of each location.

A Brand That Evolves Over Time

One of the most interesting aspects of our involvement with Ben & Jerry's has been seeing how the retail environments have evolved over the years.

While the underlying brand identity and strategy have remained consistent, the design of the stores has naturally progressed. Different locations, changing customer expectations, new materials and finishes, and evolving retail design trends have all influenced the way the brand is expressed within each environment.

Our approach has always been to understand the elements that make Ben & Jerry's distinctive and preserve those characteristics while allowing the interior design to develop.

This means that each store does not necessarily need to look identical to the previous one. Instead, the design should retain the recognisable personality of the brand while responding to the opportunities and practical requirements of its individual location.

For us, this is the balance at the heart of successful brand implementation: maintaining a consistent identity while allowing the design to remain relevant, engaging and contemporary.

From Design Concept to a Completed Store

A successful retail environment requires more than a good design concept. It needs to be properly documented, coordinated and translated into information that builders and contractors can understand and construct.

For Ben & Jerry's, HRID prepared the complete interior design documentation for each project, providing the information required to communicate the design intent and coordinate the various elements of the proposed works.

This included floor plans, interior elevations, construction details, custom joinery, materials and finishes schedules, equipment layouts, lighting, signage and other essential interior design information.

Where specialist input was required, we coordinated with the relevant consultants and suppliers, ensuring that their technical information was appropriately considered and integrated into the overall design documentation.

Our involvement continued during construction, working directly with builders to clarify design details, respond to queries and coordinate design-related matters as they arose.

This hands-on approach helped bridge the gap between the original design concept and the completed retail environment, maintaining continuity throughout the process.

An Ongoing Design Relationship

Since 2009, HRID's involvement with Ben & Jerry's has provided valuable experience in translating an established international brand into successful retail environments across Australia and New Zealand.

Working across successive store developments has given us an understanding of the importance of brand consistency, operational functionality and the ability to adapt the design to suit different locations and changing retail expectations.

We believe this experience demonstrates the value of having an interior designer who understands not only the visual identity of a brand, but also the practical requirements involved in delivering and maintaining that identity across multiple locations.

With experience spanning the complete interior design process, from concept development and detailed documentation through to construction coordination, HRID is well placed to assist businesses and established brands with individual projects, multi-site rollouts and future retail developments.

Our experience is not limited to a particular location. We welcome opportunities to bring our design expertise to retail projects across Australia, New Zealand and internationally.

Consistent in identity.

"Flexible in design. Thorough in delivery."
